Introduction

Cyclones occur during the Atlantic hurricane season from June to November, and the Cayman Islands suffer a direct hurricane hit on average once per decade. Hurricane Ivan (2004) was a notably devastating storm, during which most of Grand Cayman was completely inundated by a surge of several metres’ depth. Further back in time, Hurricane #10 of November 1932 wrought terrible destruction across the islands, and is still remembered as the worst natural disaster in Caymanian history.
